Three quick questions. CSCS sets the rules and they change, so we always point you at the official card finder to confirm before you apply.
Industry Accreditation has gone. The old “grandfather rights” route closed for renewals on 30 June 2024 and all those cards expired on 31 December 2024. Every CSCS card now has to be backed by a recognised qualification or professional-body membership.
Apply through cscs.uk.com or an official partner scheme only. Third-party “fast-track” card sites charge a fee for something you can do yourself at the official price — they add nothing and some are scams. Only cscs.uk.com (and approved partner schemes such as CPCS/NPORS, ECS and JIB/SNIPEF) can issue a genuine card.
Which CSCS card do I need?
The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card you need depends on the work you do and the qualification you hold. The card colour signals the level — and almost every card needs a current CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) test pass as well as a qualification. CSCS decides who qualifies for which card, and the rules change, so treat this tool as a guide and confirm on the official card finder before you apply.
CSCS card colours at a glance
| Card | Who it's for | Main requirement | HS&E test | Validity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Green — Labourer | General/labouring duties only | Level 1 Award in H&S in a Construction Environment | Operatives | 2 years (first card), then 5 |
| Blue — Skilled Worker | Skilled trades | NVQ/SVQ Level 2 or completed apprenticeship | Operatives (occupation-appropriate) | 5 years |
| Gold — Advanced Craft | Advanced skilled trades | NVQ/SVQ Level 3 | Operatives (occupation-appropriate) | 5 years |
| Gold — Supervisor | Supervisory occupations | NVQ/SVQ Level 3 or 4 (supervisory) | Specialist (Supervisory) | 5 years |
| Black — Manager | Managerial / technical roles | NVQ/SVQ Level 4, 5, 6 or 7 (management) | Managers & Professionals (MAP) | 5 years |
| White — AQP / PQP | Visiting professionals | Construction-related degree/HNC/HND or approved professional-body membership | Managers & Professionals (MAP) | 5 years |
| Red — Apprentice / Trainee / Experienced | People on a training pathway | On an apprenticeship, or registered on a qualification, or short-term experienced route | Appropriate level | Temporary (e.g. Apprentice 4y 6m; Trainee 5y; Experienced Worker 1y) — not renewable |
The HS&E test you need depends on the card
Operatives, skilled and trainee cards need the Operatives HS&E test. Most Gold Supervisor cards need a Specialist (Supervisory) test. Black Manager and the AQP/PQP professional cards need the Managers & Professionals (MAP) test. The pass normally has to be within the last two years when you apply — an Operatives pass will not be accepted for a manager or professional card.
Industry Accreditation (“grandfather rights”) has been withdrawn
The old route that let experienced workers get a card on the strength of an employer recommendation rather than a qualification has ended. Renewals closed on 30 June 2024 and all Industry Accreditation cards expired on 31 December 2024. From 1 January 2025 every CSCS card must be linked to a recognised qualification or membership of a CSCS-approved professional body. If you held an IA card, you now need to register for and complete the relevant qualification (an on-site assessment route is usually available for experienced workers) to get back onto a valid card.
Plant, electrical and plumbing have their own schemes
CSCS works alongside a number of partner card schemes that carry the CSCS logo. If you operate plant you'll usually need a CPCS or NPORS card; electricians and electrotechnical workers use the ECS scheme; registered plumbers and heating engineers use the JIB/SNIPEF route. A general CSCS card does not cover these occupations — apply through the right partner scheme for your trade.
Why sites ask for the right card
Most principal contractors require everyone on site to hold the CSCS (or partner-scheme) card relevant to the work they do — it is a common condition of site access and of contractor pre-qualification, even though carrying a card is not itself a legal requirement. Holding the card that matches your actual work, not just any card, is what matters.
CSCS is the authority on card eligibility and the rules change, so always confirm the current requirement on the official CSCS Card Finder and at cscs.uk.com before you apply.
RamsDocs helps draft structured RAMS from your job details. It does not replace competent-person review, site-specific judgement or your legal duties.
Need the full RAMS, not just the numbers?
Build the RAMS, add the site details, then review it before client submission.
Battering, benching, trench boxes or sheeting — what your excavation needs based on depth, soil and what's nearby.
Would your site stand up to an unannounced HSE inspection? Check against what inspectors look for.
Pick your tasks and hazards, get the PPE to specify in your RAMS with the relevant EN standards.
